Beach Safety Rules

Beach Safety RulesBeaches are the most popular summertime place to be. It is up to the public to keep them safe for everyone. To not obey the beach safety rules is just plain foolhardy and dangerous. Each beach you go to will have its own rules, depending on the local conditions, but these rules apply in most places. Take the time to learn the rules before you go.

Lifeguards
Always swim withing sight of a lifeguard. Most beaches prohibit swimming unless a lifeguard is on duty. Always obey the lifeguard’s orders immediately. They know what dangers lie in the water and if they say get out, do it. To not obey a lifeguard is a crime in many locations. If you have any questions, or are not sure about a rule, the lifeguard is the person to ask.

Children
Children should never be left to swim alone. An adult should always be with them. They should also have some level of swimming lessons before hitting the beach. Children should have the rules of the beach explained to them in a language they understand and make sure they understand how important they are. Adults should also swim with the buddy system.

Beach Safety RulesDesignated Areas
Swim only in designated areas. Non designated areas could be dangerous for many reasons such as sharp rocks on the bottom, dangerous rip tides or tide pools. If an area is designated for a specific activity, such as surfing, stay out.

Equipment
Many beaches have restrictions on the use of rafts and other equipment. They may be fun, but they could be a danger for you and other swimmers as well if they should get loose. Check out the signs at the beach. There may be certain spots where they are allowed.

Beach Safety RulesDrinks
Glass bottles are banned from most beaches for safety reasons. Alcoholic beverages are also banned. Swimming while intoxicated is just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated.

Lake Beaches
Some of the rules at a lake will be different than at the ocean. For instance, you will probably be sharing the lake with boaters. They have their sections and swimmers have theirs. Most lakes have fishing piers or jetties. If it says not to dive off of them, don’t. If there are no signs, check first. Check the depth and make sure there are no rocks on the bottom.
