We all know about the benefits of walking. Walking improves cardiovascular health, boosts your metabolism, and provides an easy way to burn calories. Walking is one of the most natural forms of exercise. Yet many of us don’t get enough walking in our lives. Sitting in offices or classrooms all day, or leading stationary lifestyles at home, sometimes we forget to make room for exercise. How can you add more walking to your life?

1) Add more walking to your life by purchasing a pedometer.

A pedometer is a wonderful motivational tool because it allows you to track how many steps you have taken. Every little step helps. I like to grab a few extra steps when I’m waiting in line, talking on my cell phone, or just waiting for my train. I just love watching those numbers go up on the pedometer!

If you use a pedometer, try to aim for at least 5,000 steps per day–9,000 if you really want to reap the benefits of walking.

2) Add more walking to your life by setting mini-goals for yourself.

When I’m working or writing, I take mini-breaks just to pace around. I’ll take mini-breaks just to pace around for five minutes or walk 500 steps before going back to work. Every little bit makes a difference. After every half hour at the computer, I make a point to move around. Taking mini-walking breaks also improves your circulation and your energy level, so you go back to work feeing refreshed.

3) Add more walking to you life by walking in place during television commercials.

Many people lead sedentary lifestyles and spend too much time in front of the television. Yet you can incorporate more exercise into your life without giving up your favorite television programs. Use the commercial breaks to walk around or jog in place. Since commercial breaks only last about three to five minutes, you can move around without tiring yourself out. Walking during commercials really adds up.

For example, if you exercise during the commercials of a two hour program, you end up doing thirty minutes of walking-not bad for a night in front of the tube!

4) Add more walking to your life by taking the stairs wherever you go.

Although it may be tempting to take the stairs or the escalator, taking the stairs could add up to several hundred extra steps a day. When you are at the mall, in the subway station, or in a multi-story building, take the stairs whenever you can.

5) If the weather is not right for outside walking, take a trip to a large venue where you can walk.

Spending the afternoon at the mall, the supermarket, or even Target or Wal-Mart will provide plenty of space to walk around. You’ll get your exercise while avoiding inclement weather conditions.

There are plenty of ways to add more walking to your life. And you can do it without drastically changing your lifestyle.
